St Kevin's College Tooronga Sports Fields

The St Kevin's College Educational and Sporting Facilities are located in Glen Iris and in close proximity to the school's Heyington campus.

DCE has been involved in the project since its inception in 2013.

Completed within a 16 month construction timeframe, it is now the largest privately owned fully synthetic sporting facility in Australasia.

Located on 5.5ha of land in Glen Iris, the old Brickworks site required 40,000 cubic metres of imported fill to create one homogenous layer sub base for the new facilities.

DCE conceptualised the initial masterplanning and completed the design of the sporting fields including:

  • 3 x FIFA Regulation 100x60m Soccer Pitch (first in Australia to be approved under the new FIFA guidelines)
  • 1 x AFL Recommended Ideal Size 165x135m Football Field
  • 12 x Cricket Nets
  • 1 x 200m Athletics Track with incorporated Long Jump, High Jump
  • 1 x Shotput Facilities
  • 1 x Indoor Half Basketball Court with 2 x Badminton
  • 1 x IHF Regulation Hockey Field with 12 Incorporated Tennis Courts
  • 2 x Pavilions and Storage facilities
  • Onsite Car Parking for 65 Cars
  • Connection to Gardiners Creek Bike Trail
  • Access Roads, retaining walls and other civil walls
The school opted to place synthetic turf across the entire playing fields and athletic track, resulting in 3.0ha of Synthetic Surfaces being laid.

One of the many features of this project is design of the subgrade of the Soccer/AFL fields in that it retains the stormwater in the profile, before discharging into Gardiners Creek. All stormwater from the buildings are retained onsite to be used within the facilities.

The Hockey and Hockey/Tennis Pitches have been designed and constructed in accordance with the FIFA guidelines for professional competition. The oval also caters for AFL for the summer season. An allowance has been made for the installation of lighting for the Number 1 Soccer Pitch.

"Acquisition of land for sporting fields has been part of the last three strategic plans of the College. Sport as Co-Curricular at the College is integral for the boys overall education and the purchase of five and a half hectares of land at Tooronga for sports fields was a once in a decades opportunity.

Dalton Consulting Engineers were engaged to coordinate and provide a Due Diligence report for the construction of the Sporting Facilities at the site. All issues raised were completed in confidence. DCE were then engaged to prepare a Functional Design, Detailed Design and coordination of the civil works for the Construction Phase.

The result is the College now has a magnificent facility incorporating three soccer pitches, one AFL ground overlaid on two of the soccer pitches, one hockey pitch, twelve tennis courts overlaid on the hockey pitch, a two hundred metre athletics track, field events for long jump, high jump and shot put, twelve cricket nets, two pavilions and a storage shed.

The DCE design enabled the maximum use of the property and met all of the Colleges requested needs."
